Dowel joints are another type of modified butt joint. This is a popular joint with frame makers using automatic equipment.
Some may challenge this but I'm willing to say that it's not the favorite joint of most woodworkers when doing framework.
Even with jigs to position the holes it's hard to get the joints just right. I usually wind up drillingone or both holes oversize just to get the alignment right.
In other applications, where a single dowel pin can be used in a joint, these joints becomes a better joint to work with and sometimes even the best.
Post and cap applications or post sections that need to be held in alignment are just two examples.
